Anna B. Hammond of Dover passed away on February 12, 2018 at 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Helen and Jerry Banks, Sr. she was born on April 21, 1931 in Cokesbury, MD where she resided until she went to away to college.
As she always wanted to be a teacher, she attended Bowie State College (now University) where she received a BS in Education and received her Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She began her journey toward a purpose driven life of an educator by serving as the youngest Black principal in Snow Hill (MD) schools.
Everywhere she lived (MD, PA, and DE) throughout her professional career, she was an educator. For almost 30 years she was an administrator with the Capital School District, serving as an Associate Principal at William Henry and Central Middle Schools. The joy of her life was providing love, discipline and support in helping her students realize their potential.
Given her union with Rev. Clayton Hammond, Sr. she served as the First Lady of the numerous United Methodist churches (i.e.Cokesbury, Union Memorial, Buttonwood Christiana, and Whatcoat) where he was appointed
Aside from being a committed educator, she was a nurturing and loving parent, a role model for young Black women and educators, a successful entrepreneur, a Master Gardener, a world traveler, a great cook and a faithful member of Whatcoat U.M. Church for over 40 years.
She is survived by two children, (Clay and Lori); four Grandchildren (Shauntay, Brandon, Keia and Olivia); four Great Grandchildren (Tyler, Skylar, Brandon, Jr. and Phoenix); four sisters (Catherine, Mildred, Shirley and Theresa); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter (Lorna); a sister (Blanche); three brothers (Jerry, Pierre and Severson); and both husbands (Clayton Hammond, Sr. and Albertis Carter).
Anna Hammond will be sorely missed by many friends and loved ones!
