I spent my early childhood on the West Side of Wilmington, where I attended Heritage and Warner Elementary Schools, and the Cab Calloway Middle School of Arts; with my lower school education concluding at Christ Our King School.
My dream and goal of owning my own business began during my sophomore year in high school, when I began doing minor jobs in the funeral business industry. In 1999, I graduated from Hodgson Vo-Technical High School and went on to attend the New England Institute of Funeral Services at the Mt. Ida College, in Newton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. I graduated Suma Cum Laude from Mt. Ida in 2001.
My career in funeral service continued in Baltimore, Maryland at the Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services where I became licensed in the funeral business, serving in many capacities as mortician, funeral director and manager.
During my eight years at Vaughn C. Greene’s, I honed my skills in the funeral business while never losing sight of the dream to return to my home town and establish a funeral business. My dream was realized in 2009 with the dedication of the Evan W. Smith Funeral Services business, and the grand opening of our first location at 201 N. Union Street the following year. Since opening our first location, Evan W. Smith Funeral Services has been the recipient of the prestigious “Best of Delaware” recognition by Delaware Today. With a second location set to open soon in Dover, Delaware, it is an honor to bring our superior service, elegance, and matchless quality to the Wilmington and Dover communities we serve.
