Kimberly was born on July 14, 1965 to Joseph Newman and Mary Newman. On December 9, 1989 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Kevin McCown. She was a devoted sister to Una Walker and brother-in-law Orlando Walker Sr. Kimberly was a devoted Aunt to Orlando, Jr. and Landis Walker. Also left to cherish Kimberly’s memory are father-in-law Lowell McCown and mother-in-law Beulah McCown; and a host of treasured aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, two brothers-in-law, other extended family members, and innumerable caring friends. Kimberly’s sudden and unexpected transition is felt deeply by her family and countless friends who will miss her dearly.
Kimberly was a former Research Scientist with specialty in Cellular Molecular /Tumor Biology and Clinical Trial development. She held positions of increasing responsibility at The National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI), Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University (NCI-designated), Fox Chase Cancer Center, Quest Diagnostics Inc. and Johnson & Johnson.
She was a member of the American Cancer Society’s Extramural Research Grants Council, a past Stakeholder Reviewer, on the Society’s Cancer Control and Prevention: Psychosocial and Behavioral Research Committee. She was a Peer Reviewer for the California Breast Cancer Research Program and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
Kimberly was committed to transforming and sustaining communities by serving as an Advocate in Science for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, where she served on the Komen Community Health Advisors (KCHA) Board and as peer reviewer (Community Health [Patient Navigation] and Career Catalyst Awards) for the past 11 years.
She was an Affiliate member of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) since 2011.
She was a member and the current Eastern Area Health and Human Services Chair for The Links, Incorporated/The Links, Foundation (a National and International 501c 3& 4, volunteer organization for professional women), which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. She received numerous awards, published several papers and attended many scientific and advocacy conferences throughout the country.
Recently, she was invited to speak at the AC3 (African Caribbean Cancer Consortium) in Martinique, West Indies and to be a Co-facilitator for the American Cancer Society’s National Volunteer and Staff Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. She currently served on the University of the Sciences, Internal Review Board (IRB).
Kimberly attended the University of Delaware where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Chemistry.
