Obituary for William Loper Scott

William Loper Scott
William Loper Scott was born on September 23, 1932, in Magnolia, Delaware the fifth of 10 children born to Edith and Wayman Scott Sr. He departed this life surrounded by family on June 3, 2017. He received his early education in the Kent County School system where he met his wife Mary Maloy from which they had three children, Sheldon, Jeffrey and Rachel. William graduated from Delaware State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1958. He also studied at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Maryland. William served proudly in the US Army & Reserves until his Honorable Discharge in November 1961.

A lifelong dedication to service led William to work nine years at the Sunny Crest Farm for Boys in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a Farm Supervisor/Assistant Director. While there, he received an award from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for community service in the West Chester/Cheyney areas. He was a Group Worker at the Philadelphia Youth Development Center under the Department of Public Welfare in Harrisburg, PA and retired on disability after thirty-three years from the State of Delaware as a Senior Probation and Parole Officer.

William received his early Christian training at Mt. Plymouth A.M.E. Church and later joined Mt. Friendship A.M.E. with his wife. As a member of Mt. Friendship he was a Pastor’s Steward, Conference delegate and chaired many Men’s Day services. When called upon he enjoyed participating in the services of surrounding churches until his health began to decline.

He was a member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge for fifty-six years and had served as Past Master of Prudence Lodge No. 6, enhancing inactive membership from the lack of quorum status, leading to being among the first Masonic Cornerstone Laying at a Masonic owned Temple in the history of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge in the State of Delaware. He was a Second District Grand Lecturer and Second District Deputy Grand Master. As Master and Deputy he had the honor bestowed to coordinate the establishment of Dover Air Force Base Lodge #28. Additionally, he served as Grand Orator of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge in 1984; High Priest as a Royal Arch Mason; Most Worthy Joshua, Heroines of Jericho, Corinthian Consistory No. 5; member of Electa Chapter No. 6; Chief and Assistant Rabban of Suakim Temple #60. On May 28, 2007 at the 126th Annual Session of the United Supreme Council in Philadelphia, he was elevated to the Thirty Third and Last Degree of the Prince Hall Masons.

William joined Omega Psi Phi Fraternity along his older brothers Wayman, James and Lester while in college. He is a former member of the Middle Atlantic States Correctional Association (MASCA), which included the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Delaware and Connecticut serving as Second and First Vice-President. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Mamie A. Warren Senior Center in Smyrna, Delaware until the time of his death.

William was known to be a quiet yet very humorous man always keeping his wife and family in stitches with his dry humor. He was preceded in death by his son Sheldon and his grandson Aarine; brothers Wayman, Harry, James and Melvin.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Mary of 64 years, his son Jeffery and daughter Rachel; grandchildren Schevenchko, India, Shella and Brian; great grandchildren Jayla, Jasryn and Charles; daughter-in-law Ann; sisters Margaret Bowers and Edith Berry; brothers Lester (Alberta), Lewis, and Daniel (Nancy); sisters-in-law Lowan and Mary Ann along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
