Obituary for Winona Deputy

Winona Deputy
Winona Hill Deputy was born November 23, 1933 in Hallwood, VA to the late James Hill and Josephine Banks Hill. She received her high school diploma from James H. Grooves in Woodside, DE. In 1991 she retired from Lake Forest School District, after 32 years of service, with the last 5 years served as the Food Service Manager of both LF South Elementary and WT Chipman Middle Schools.

Nona, as both family and friends lovingly referred to her, was a pillar of her church and community. Her dedication led her to serve as lay leader and on various committees throughout the Peninsula Delaware Conference and within her home church (Metropolitan United Methodist Church), to include the Outreach Ministry and Administrative Council. Her civic mindedness led her to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Harrington Senior Center, Board of Trustees of the Harrington Public Library, and the local Rotary Club. Yet, it was her passion for children and caring nature that inspired her to co-found her proudest accomplishment, a community tutorial program. Always the advocate for youth, Winona believed that “a child, no matter who the child, should have the chance to be the best that [they] can be” and with that motto she ensured that community youth were able to receive free educational assistance 1 night a week for over 8 years.

In her spare time, she enjoyed hosting family gatherings in her home, ensuring that there was a favorite dish prepared for all. She also enjoyed traveling, crocheting, fishing and gardening. Above all, she cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Winona was preceded in death by her devoted husband of over 45 years Donald; her son James, and grandson Antonio Deputy.

She leaves to mourn her loving daughter Jackie Diarrassouba; son Richard Deputy and his wife (Eunice); brother Henry Hill and his wife (Minnie); sister Elethea Robinson; daughter-in-law Karen Hall-Deputy; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
