Michael Anthony Tate, son of Adelaide Tate and Earl Tate (deceased), was born on November 30, 1957 in Wilmington, Delaware. He departed this life on March 10, 2017 in St. Francis Hospital Compassionate Care.
Michael received his early education in the public schools of Wilmington, DE and graduated from P. S. DuPont High School in 1975 where he participated in the school choir and other activities. After graduating from high school, he attended Norfolk State University and decided he wanted to pursue a singing career. He left Norfolk State to travel on tour with the “Legendary Platters.” After that endeavor, he went to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania to continue his studies in Music. Michael finally obtained a BSMM in Business and Music from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania where he attended from 1983 to 1986. While attending Cheyney, he participated in several activities; such as, Student Resident Advisor, Student Administration of Robinson Hall, Student Choir Director and Activity Coordinator for the Math & Computer Summer Camp.
Michael’s compassion for music afforded him the opportunity to meet and work with many artists. While living in New York, he wrote a song for the gospel group “Commission” and received credit on their CD. He was a member of the church choir at Riverside Church in Manhattan and participated in productions at the Lincoln Center in New York. Michael started his own entertainment production company in October, 2013 called the “Artistry of Mike Tate.” In 2015, he accomplished one of his lifelong goals to produce and record his own CD entitled “The Artistry Presents Mike Tate & Friends – A King Is Born” featuring Gerald Chavis.
Michael joined the Cornerstone Fellowship Baptist Church where he attended until his death. He loved his church family and shared his musical presence when and wherever he could.
He leaves to cherish his memories mother, Adelaide Tate of Hampton, VA; sisters, Earline Holden (Albert), Deborah Kennard of Wilmington, DE; brothers, LeRoy Tate (Joyce) of Wake Forest, NC, Charles E. Tate (Sharlene) of Hampton, VA and Earl E. Tate, Sr. (Renee) of Wilmington, DE; Godchildren, Pere’ Gaddis, Peter Gaddis, Brittany Butler and Sonti Miller and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family, his musical family and friends.
