Thomas Williams was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 1, 1937, to the late Colonel and Celeste Williams.
He attended Cedars Elementary and Bowman High School in Vicksburg Mississippi. As a young man he moved to Detroit, Michigan with his sister, Elizabeth and her family.
Thomas, affectionately known as “Tommie” was employed by Chrysler Corporation. In 1957 Chrysler transferred six hundred families from the Detroit Plant to the Newark, Delaware plant. Tommie was a part of that Chrysler family.
Later he became a member of the Masons, Local 199 and the Coalition of Black Trade Unions. He worked as a Local 199 Laborer for many contractors, including Chrysler, GM and also the Delaware City Refinery. Tommie was proud to have helped build the Brandywine, DuPont, Hercules buildings, St. Francis Hospital, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, just to name a few.
In 2013 he was awarded a 50 year Gold Membership Card from the Liuna Headquarters Office for his outstanding service. Tommie always volunteered his services and participated in many community and political events held by Local 199.
In 1970 Tommie met Dora Jean Hines, and they were united in Holy Matrimony on December 12, 1972. From this union a blended family consisting of three children (Norma, Jaqueline and Anthony) were united and additional blessing of a baby girl (Tara).
Tommie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His love and affection for his family was exemplified throughout his life in many ways. As head of household Tommie always made sure his family needs were met. He loved his grandchildren and always encouraged them to go the church, do well in school and embody exceptional work ethics. Tommie would say to his children and grandchildren “Go to work”, "Don't argue with dem people! ", "Do your job!", "Be on time!”
Tommie was a longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He attended Bible Study and Prayer Service regularly.
Tommie loved sports his favorite football team was the "Dallas Cowboys", he enjoyed watching basketball, especially when Allen Iverson or Lebron James were playing.
He was preceded in death, by his parents, Colonel and Celeste Williams; siblings ,Emily Clayborne, Mary Smith, Catherine Johnson, Castine Nash, Daisy, Elizabeth, Colonel, Simon, Robert, Mack and Wallace Williams.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving children, Norma Taylor, Jaqueline Daniels, (Carlton) of Greenville, NC, Anthony Powell and Tara Williams; Grandchildren, Michele Brown, Taleka Chandler (Jeremy), Dameka and Da-sean Williams; great-grandchildren, Harold Best III and Jenna Cudr; one sister, Annie Bell Harris (Will) of Vicksburg, MS; devoted nephew, Richard Williams, Sr.; Goddaughter, Bria Blackstock and host of cousins, nieces, nephews, a devoted friend, Michael Blackstock and Cecelia Wilson, the Local 199 family and many friends.
