Deacon Emeritus George Philip Braxton was born on December 2, 1933 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Morgan and Viola Braxton, the eighth of nine children. Deacon Braxton attended the public schools in Wilmington and graduated from Howard High School. He also graduated from Goldey Beacon College with a degree in Business Administration.
Deacon Braxton was united in holy matrimony on June 28, 1958 to his soulmate, Peggy Vercher. Out of this beautiful union a son, Jeffery Bertram was born.
Deacon Braxton gave his life to Christ at an early age at the Eighth Street Church and remained a dedicated member for over seventy years, including Canaan Baptist Church.
Deacon Braxton was a true believer in the Word of God, and lived his life commensurate with that belief. He was a prayer warrior who was a member of several prayer groups… including those that were held on Wednesday afternoons and Friday nights at the church and in homes. Deacon Braxton became an ordained Deacon many, many years ago and served outstandingly in that capacity until he elected to become Deacon Emeritus on March 20, 2011, in a ceremony held at Canaan Baptist Church.
Deacon Braxton had a gentle, loving, and wonderful spirit that endeared him to everyone who interacted with him on any level. He loved singing God’s praises and could be found singing on choirs, in the home, at other gathering as well, but most of all, he enjoyed immensely singing with the Men of God Choir. He remained a faithful member even when his health was declining and Alex had to ensure his getting to rehearsals and engagements.
Deacon Braxton lived a blessed life and would always declare that he was “blessed by the best!”, and “blessed and highly favored!” One of Deacon Braxton’s favorite scriptures was Psalm 121, which he had committed to memory and quoted it even in his final days. Deacon Braxton enlisted in the Air Force Services and served honorably for twenty-one years, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant. Deacon Braxton also worked for and retired from the United Postal Service as its first Express Mail Coordinator in New Castle.
Deacon Braxton was preceded in death by his parents; Morgan and Viola Braxton, six siblings; Alice, Harold, Marie Walley, Franklin, Charles and Ethel Boston.
Deacon Braxton leaves to cherish a rich legacy and a multitude of wonderful memories his devoted wife, Peggy Vercher Braxton; one son Jeffery (Teresa), three grandchildren, Jihad Abdur Rahman, Terrance Braxton, and Tania Braxton; two siblings, Wilbert Thomas Braxton(Evangeline) of Phoenix, Arizona, Norma E.
