Obituary for William G. Colburn, Jr.

William “Billy” Colburn, Jr., son of the late William Sr. and Delores Colburn Chesson, was born August 5, 1954 in Wilmington, Delaware. He entered eternal rest on May 8, 2019 after a sudden illness.

Billy graduated from Pierre Samuel Dupont High School in 1972, where he played drums in the marching band. In the summer months, Billy taught music at Wilmington Music School. Following graduation, he briefly worked for the U.S. Postal Service before pursuing his passion and embarking on his extensive professional music career, playing with many well-known artists. Billy mastered multiple instruments, including the drums, piano, bass violin, and bass guitar. In recent years, Billy shared his talent and love for music with the Miracle Tabernacle God and Christ Church, where he played bass guitar every Sunday.

Billy will forever be remembered for his kind and gentle nature, his affinity for community, his gifted musical talent, and his genuine love for his family and friends.

Billy leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, whom he adored, Aaron and Israel, his former wife, Sharon Colburn, mother, Delores Chesson, step-father, Selvy Chesson, sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Hartley Cooper. He is also survived by a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Each held a special place in his heart.
