Obituary for Gladys M Slappy
Gladys Mayer Slappy was born Gladys Mae Moore, affectionally known as Doll Baby, to the late Harvey Campbell, Sr and Mable Moore on August 29, 1940 in Bridgeville, DE., along with two of her sisters, Carlester and Audrey. She was raised by her father’s sister, the late Gladys “Annie” Edmond and her husband, Willie Edmond.
Gladys was the 2nd eldest of 13 children. She received her early education in the Wilmington public school system and graduated from Howard High School, class of 1958. Gladys held several jobs before she settled into the Healthcare sector. She worked at the Wilmington General Hospital in the maternity department for several years. Eventually she retired from the Delaware State Hospital with over 30 years of service and she loved her Lower Level Carvel work family.
Gladys met and married James Robert Mayer. From this union three children were born: Jamie Ronell Mayer, Lisa Mayer-Garrett, and Kelly D. Mayer; four grandchildren, Marsaan Ronell Newman, Corey Kauleaf James Mayer, Dior Bryant and LaNaya Neecole Garrett; five great-grand children, London James Mayer, Rocklyn Starr Mayer, Harley Savannah Mayer, Marsaan Newman Jr, Dior Bryant Jr and Demin Rain Bryant
As life evolved, Gladys met and married Charles F. Slappy Sr. From this union, she was gifted three step-children: Shelly, Gina, and Charles Jr. and a host of step-grandchildren , and step-great grandchildren.
Gladys lived a full and adventurous life. She was an avid shopper with an impeccable eye for quality. Gladys was an exquisite fashionista with no expenses spared. She was regal and a tall drink of water. She loved to travel and had visited several places, from Chicago, Canada, Alaska, not limited to several Islands: Turks and Cacois, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico to name a few. One of her favorite sayings was, “I Gotta Go”. Gladys understood the art of music, dance, and travel for it was her expression of freedom. Glady also enjoyed decorating her home and taking care of her yard. She was still cutting grass and pruning flowers up to her call to glory. She was constantly complimented by her neighbors and others regarding her picture- perfect yard and home decor.
Gladys was a straight shooter and fun-loving. She loved people, especially family gatherings. She welcomed anyone and everyone to her home as long as you kept it clean…..and she meant CLEAN. She ran a TIGHT ship and didn’t hesitate to throw one overboard that didn’t follow the rules. Gladys believed in God all her days long. She would say to her children God is what got her through.
Gladys was preceded in glory by her parents, Harvey Campbell, Sr. and Mable Moore Dixon; caretakers, Willie and Gladys Edmond; brothers, Harvey Campbell, Jr. and Robin Moore; sisters, Marguerite Dixon, Betty Dixon-Knox, and Manrise Moore.
Gladys, aka Doll Baby, leaves to cherish her memories, devoted husband, Charles F. Slappy, Sr.; children, Jamie, Lisa (Herschel) and Kelly; grand and great-grandchildren; sisters, Carlester Moore, Audrey Smith (Harry), Clare “Diane” Moore-Ivey (David), Joanne Dixon and Margie Dixon; brothers, Larry Moore and Winston Dixon and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to her partner in crime cousin Wilbur “Butch” Moore and daughter in love, Toni Newman and her children.
