Obituary for Jerome Sylvester Evans (Pike)

Jerome S. Evans, age 64, was born December 12, 1954 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late John S. Evans and Delores Evans Birthwright. He went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

At an early age, Jerome learned to trust in God and to lean on him for direction. Such early lessons were beneficial to him throughout his lifetime. He met many challenges along life’s way. These challenges enabled him to meet life with enduring strength, unwavering faith and tenacious perseverance. Jerome knew and loved the Lord, his favorite hymns were “He’s Sweet I Know” and “There’s A Bright Side Somewhere”. His favorite scriptures were John 3:16-17 and Matthew 6:9-13.

Jerome attended Howard High School and graduated in the class of 1972. During high school, Jerome was an avid baseball player, awesome football player and an excellent wrestler. He was good at every sport in which he participated. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Delaware State College (now Delaware State University).

Jerome was lovingly known as “Pike” to his friends and family. He worked for more than 20 years at Howard High School of Technology where he held multiple positions, including Fire Chief, Custodian, Shop Steward and Union Representative. Pike took the time to mentor students he felt needed a big brother. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Howard High School athletic programs, especially the basketball program. Family and friends saw him as kind hearted, gentle and generous. Pike shared time with his childhood friends the “Hawks” from the 11th Street bridge area. Pike enjoyed watching sports, especially the Philadelphia Eagles during football season. He had an unwavering adoration for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a diehard Eagles fan.

Pike enjoyed listening to music, singing, debating political and current issues, playing horseshoes, checkers, chess and was an avid animal lover. He loved to watch old Western movies. Pike was a lover of good food. Pike had a zeal for life, which was evident through his interaction with family and friends. He welcomed family and friends and was a strong supporter of his nieces and nephews in their educational endeavors. Pike saw the benefit for education and encouraged them to be successful.

On Wednesday March 20, 2019, after a lengthy illness, Jerome quietly slipped into eternal peace and rest. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his younger brother, Stephen A. Evans “Geat”, and nephew, Shyron Johnson.

He leaves cherished memories with his brother, Thomas Johnson-Evans, Sr.; sisters, Valarie Evans, Rev. Jacqueline Evans-Wilson (Robert), Shelley Evans-Harris (Harvey); two Aunts, Phyllis J. Evans, Gwendolyn Evans-Taylor; nine nieces and four nephews; fifteen great nieces; fourteen great nephews; two great-great nieces; and a host of cousins, other family and friends.
