Planning Ahead - “A Wise Decision, a Great Choice!”

Evan W. Smith, LFD

Evan W. Smith Funeral Services

We plan for just about every special event that affects our lives; births, graduations, careers, weddings, and retirement.  We spend most of our lives planning for the possible or the “what if,” so why not plan for the one thing we know to be absolute?  Yet a lot of people find it difficult to plan their exit from this life.  Death is inevitable.  No one will leave this life alive, so why not plan for your end of life details.  It is my goal to offer some insight on planning ahead.

Your story is very unique.  You probably have specific ideas about how you want your life celebrated and remembered.  As with all the important milestones accomplished over your lifetime, planning your funeral arrangements should be done with the same amount of careful thought so that your wishes may be honored.

The death of a loved one is a very difficult time for everyone.  Yet, during this period of grief and emotional readjustment, family members and friends are confronted with dozens of decisions.  What kind of funeral should it be?  What other arrangements should be included?  Who needs to be notified?  And, just as importantly, how much will it cost?

By preplanning, or prearranging your funeral, you can decide on how you would like your life to be celebrated, prior to your time of need.  You can consider all the options and create a memorable experience for the people you truly care about.

Why is Preneed important?  The concept of Preneed – the funded prearrangements actively marketed today, has been around since the late 1980’s.  During this rather brief period of time, much has changed.  A growing number of consumers have embraced the benefits it offers loved ones.

As we are living longer, preneed provides the means to address the passing of a life with the greatest amount of dignity and the least amount of burden for families.   In recent years, people have learned that there are very few “rules” for planning funerals.  The bottom line is that a funeral can be just about anything you want it to be!

Funeral prices, just like most products or services, increase over time.  By prefunding today, you can be assured that the money will be there to help cover tomorrow’s funeral costs and prevent the financial burden on those close to you.  Handling the expense of a funeral can be extremely stressful and even a hardship on your family.

A few of the benefits of advance planning to consider are, it is regarded as an exempt asset, it’s transferable, your cost will not increase, there are optional payment plans, programs to fit everyone, consumer friendly for beneficiaries, and peace of mind.

Prearranging allows you to take advantage of customizing special services or personalizing funerals.  For example, military veteran benefits may include flags, grave markers, military rites and a plot in a national cemetery; but eligibility depends on length of active service and the type of separation or discharge.

Prepaid funeral contracts are intended to ensure that consumers who purchase funeral services in advance of need make informed decisions, deal only with licensed funeral directors, and have the right to cancel contracts or transfer prepaid funds from one funeral service provider to another as they choose.  The money follows the insured individual.

There are a variety of prefunding options available.  We would welcome the opportunity to help you determine which one best meets your needs.  Preplanning is a decision only you can make.   For more information, please contact us at info@evanwsmithfs.com.
